Emma J. Johnson, 102 of Ellendale, ND formerly of Forbes, ND died May 18, 2013 at Prince of Peace Care Center, Ellendale. The funeral is 10am Thursday, May 23, 2013 at Presbyterian United Methodist Church, Ellendale with Pastor Paul Henschen officiating. Visitation is 2-7pm Wednesday, with a prayer service at 5:30pm at Hoven Funeral Chapel, Ellendale. Burial is at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen, SD. Arrangements by Hoven Funeral Chapel. Emma J. Johnson, 102 was born May 7, 1911 to Fredrick Roehl and Amelia Heinke in rural Dickey County, ND. She was educated at country school. She was the oldest girl of 18 children. As a young woman she worked for the Ernie & Elsie Muske and Ross & Marion Dunphy families as a nanny and housekeeper. On June 25, 1936 Emma married Robert C Johnson at the Dickey County Courthouse. They made their home near Forbes ND where she resided for 60 years. Robert died in 1982 and Emma continued to reside on the farm until 1996 when she moved into Ellendale. She moved to Evergreen place in 2007 and in 2009 she moved to Prince of Peace Care Center where she resided until her death May 18 2013. Emma was a member of St. Marks Methodist Church of Forbes, later transferring her membership to the Presbyterian United Methodist Church, Ellendale. She also held memberships in the American Legion Auxillary, Homemakers club, Birthday Club, Big Sister Program and a 4-H leader all in Forbes, ND. The light of Emma’s life was her two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, canning, sewing, children, dogs and cats. She is survived by her son: Raymond (Ione) Johnson, Ellendale, ND; two grandchildren: Myla Jenkins, Ellendale, Tyson (Melissa) Johnson, Ellendale; four great Grandchilren Ashley & Kelsie Jenkins and Kyle & Kole Johnson; five sisters: Hulda (Leonard) Kuninobu, CA, Viola Williams, WY, Ruth March, MO, Helen (Jack) Hartley, CA, Lydia (Harold) Spies, CA and many nieces and nephews. Emma was preceded in death by her husband, parents, six brothers and six sisters.
