Grace Ellen Kaiser, 90 of Monango, ND died October 23 at Avera St. Luke's Hospital, Aberdeen, SD. Her funeral is 10:30am Monday, October 28 at Presbyterian United Methodist Church, Ellendale with Pastors Gaylen Sylvester and Randy Hahne officiating. Visitation is 2-6pm with a prayer service at 5pm Sunday at Hoven Funeral Chapel, Ellendale. Visitation continues one hour prior to the church service. Burial is at Ellendale City Cemetery. Arrangements by Hoven Funeral Chapel. Grace was born July 19, 1923 in Ottawa County, Kansas to Ernest and Ida (Geist) Phelps. Grace graduated from Miltonvale High School in 1941. On June 20, 1941 she married Elmo Kaiser. They farmed in Kansas until March of 1951 when they pursued their dream of farming and ranching in North Dakota. They purchased their ranch in Whitestone Township where Grace and Elmo raised five sons, Charles (Ray), Robert (Bob), Frank, John and James (Jim). Grace continued to reside at Kaiser Ranch until her death. With her wonderful cooking and generosity to all, Grace was the host of every large family gathering. She enjoyed gardening, canning, working beside Elmo on the farm, listening to country music, reading, family visits to Kansas and most of all spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be remembered always for her presence at every important family event, her patience, humor, loyalty, determination and words of wisdom. Her positive outlook and concern left everyone around her feeling uniquely valued. Survivors include her husband of 72 years, Elmo; five sons, Ray (Jeremy Johnson) Kaiser, Blaine, MN, Bob (Karen) Kaiser, Ellendale, ND, Frank (Margaret) Kaiser, Monango, ND, John (Lou Ann) Kaiser, Monango, ND, Jim (Kathy) Kaiser, Washburn, ND; one sister, Betty Reed, Oakhill, KS, two brothers, Wayne (Melvajean) Phelps, Hutchinson, KS, Jim Phelps, Wakefield, KS; her sisters-in-law and brother-in law, Patricia Kaiser, Inglewood, CA and Joyce and Clarence Swallow, Manhattan, KS. Grace is also survived by eleven grandchildren, Jeff (Nicole) Kaiser, Alison (Kyle) Wendt, Steve (Bobbi) Kaiser, Tom (Becky) Kaiser, Anne (Randy) Hahne, Sarah Kaiser, Michael (Kristin) Kaiser, Ellen (Micah) Doebler, Charles (Brittney) Kaiser, Joseph and Andrew Kaiser; twelve great-grandchildren, Lauren Kaiser, Jacob, Alex and Evan Wendt, Grace, Lincoln, Luke and Evalyn Kaiser, Audrey, Hadley and Lucy Hahne, Ethan Doebler; and many nieces and nephews. Grace was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Marshall Phelps, brothers-in-law Clayton Reed, C. Wayne Kaiser, Don Kaiser and granddaughter, Alicia Kaiser.
