He was the son of Reinhold and Christina (Mammel) Steinwand. Benny was raised and educated in Rural Merricourt. In 1941 he married Emily I. Gall and they resided in Merricourt while Benny farmed. In 1953 they moved to Ellendale, where Benny worked as a mechanic at Brownie's Service and then on to Snyder Ford. Benny and Emily raised their two sons, Dewey and Michael in Ellendale. Upon retirement, Benny filled his time by mowing many of the lawns in Ellendale and the local baseball diamond. He took great pride in the work he did. When Benny's health started to fail he resided at Evergreen Place and later he moved to Prince of Peace Care Center where he resided until his death July 14, 2014. Benny was known to be quite the "historian" of events that occurred in Ellendale. He enjoyed fishing when he found time and having daily coffee at the NoDak Cafe. In the past year, Benny enjoyed the relationship he was building with his grandson. Benny is survived by one son and daughter-in-law: Michael and Carol Steinwand of Oshkosh, WI, one grandson: Nicholas Steinwand of Aberdeen, SD, very special friend of the family: Irene Reule, Ellendale, ND and many nieces and nephews. Benny was preceded in death by his parents, wife: Emily; eldest son: Dewey, three brothers: Otto, Donald and Lenard and one sister: Hilda Gebhardt.
