Alvin Curtis Sand

Alvin Curtis Sand 65 of Ellendale, ND died April 15, 2015 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen, SD. The funeral service is 10am Saturday, April 18 at St. Helena’s Catholic Church, Ellendale with Father John F. Kizito officiating. Visitation is 2-8pm with a prayer service at 7pm Friday at Hoven Funeral Chapel. Visitation continues one hour prior to church services Saturday. Burial is at St. Helena’s Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements by Hoven Funeral Chapel. Curt was born December 2, 1949 to Alvin and Edna (Fleming) Sand. He was raised on the family farmstead near Ellendale, ND where he attended both elementary and high School. Curt participated in both football and wrestling throughout high school, qualifying for state wrestling in 1968. After attending high school he enrolled at UND-Ellendale Branch for one year, then transferred to Valley City State College. Curt married Shirlin Burgad on December 27, 1969 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Linton, ND. They lived in Strasburg ND for one year before moving back to Ellendale where Curt began farming with his father. Curt purchased his own farm in 1978 where they raised their family. Curt planted wheat, barley, oat and corn crops and raised both cattle and hogs. He enjoyed both winter and summer fishing, watching Nascar and old western movies, playing cards, and spending quality time with his grandchildren. Curt loved to give his grandchildren tractor and pick-up rides out to see the cows, which were one of Curt’s favorite parts of the farm. Curt is survived by his wife Shirlin of 45 years; two children Tara (Joe) Ulmer, Horace, ND and Nathan (Angie) Sand, Ellendale, ND; four grandchildren: Riley and Reese, Horace, ND, Jaeger and Riggin, Ellendale, ND; his mother: Edna Sand, Ellendale, ND; two brothers: John Sand, Ellendale, ND, and Perry (Wendy) Sand, De Smet, SD; one sister: Amanda (Doug) Johnson and many beloved nieces and nephews. Curt was preceded in death by his father Alvin Sand; mother and father-in-law Alice and Aloys Burgad.
