Duane Steiger

Duane M. Steiger, 76, of Ellendale, ND formerly of Bowdle, SD was born November 22, 1932, near Leola, SD to Andrew and Anna (Mohr) Steiger. Duane was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Leola, SD. He received his education at Leola and Forbes area schools. After his education, he worked at the Homestake Mine at Lead. In 1952 Duane enlisted in the United States Air Force. On January 15, 1955, Duane married Arlene Krein in Eureka, SD. In March 1957 Duane received his honorable discharge from the United States Air Force. He then worked with Brink Construction building power lines for a short time before being employed with Montana Dakota Utilities at Ipswich in June 1957. Duane transferred to Bowdle, SD on November 22, 1957 and retired there December 1994. In June 2008 Duane moved to Prince of Peace Care Center, Ellendale where he resided until his death on December 24, 2008. Duane enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and best of all woodworking and spending time with his grandchildren. He was active in the Legion, Jaycees, Bowdle School Board, Bowdle City Council, Bowdle Fire Department, St. Paul ELCA Board and Prairieview Housing Executive Board. Grateful to have shared in his life is his wife Arlene Steiger, Ellendale, ND; three daughters: Sherry (Marshall) Dunham, Caliente, NV, Monica (Garry) Mertz, Ellendale, ND, Gwen (Jonathan) Benson, Hurley, SD; six grandchildren: Tara, Kelsey & Shayna Mertz, Ellendale, ND; Alexandra, Ashley & Gus Benson, Hurley, SD; one sister: Lorentina (Ivan) Schlenker, Forbes, ND; one brother: Walter (Marilyn) Steiger, Clark, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Herold and Clarence. Funeral: 11am Monday at St. Paul ELCA Church, Bowdle with Pastor Patrick Hahn officiating. Visitation: Sunday 2pm-8pm and prayer service at 7pm with Pastor Tyson Labuhn officiating all at Hoven Funeral Chapel, 300 1st St. S. Ellendale. Visitation also Monday one hour prior to services in Bowdle. Burial: 11am Tuesday at Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, SD. Casket Bearers: Alvin Kurle, Gideon Schuh, Scott Daede, Berkely Gisi, Larry Gauer and Eugene Frankfurth. Honorary Casket Bearers: Tara, Kelsey & Shayna Mertz, Alexandra, Ashley & Gus Benson. Organists: Dani Hoffman and Ellen Fiechtner. Special Music by: The Bowdle Boys accompanied by Margaret Bobby. Ushers: Maurice Hoffman and Ward Oster.
