Grace A. Caldwell

Grace A. Caldwell, 88 of Ellendale, ND died May 20, 2016 at Prince of Peace Care Center, Ellendale. She was born September 21, 1927 to Rudolph and Frieda Widmer on the family farm west of Whitestone Battlefield, near Merricourt, ND. Grace attended Whitestone Hill country school walking 2 miles to school each day with her siblings. Being the second oldest child, Grace shared in the hard work on the farm. Not only caring for animals but she also worked in the fields. She attended church every Sunday with her family, sang in the choir and also played piano and the old pump organ for church services. As a young girl, Grace enjoyed the fun games she played with her siblings and cousins. Grace married Joseph Ulmer and they resided in Ellendale. They later divorced and she married Vinson Caldwell on November 26, 1969. In 2001, after Vinson’s death, Grace moved to Ellendale Village Apartments. She resided there until April 2015 when she moved to Prince of Peace Care Center. Grace loved music. She enjoyed playing the guitar, accordion, singing and even yodeled on an Aberdeen, SD radio station. She also liked to crochet, quilt, embroider, bake and decorate cakes. Grateful to have shared in her life are her son: Larry (Tanya) Ulmer, Bosque Farms, NM; daughters: Gayle (Larry) Martinosky, Evanston WY, Janet (Stanley) Ulmer, Twyla (Robert) Trautmann all of Ellendale, ND; grandchildren: Shawn (Matthew) Ketterling, Mansfield, SD, Patrick (Jennifer) Ulmer, St. Cloud, MN, Heidi (Nathan) Johnson, Omaha NE, Bobbi Jo (Michael) Schmidt, Mandan, ND; step-grandchildren: Ariana Marquez, Bosque Farms, NM, Rachel (Dennis) Johnston, Citra, FL; great grandchildren: Briar Michael and Eli Joseph Schmidt, Mandan, ND, Ava Grace Ulmer, St. Cloud, MN and Asher Robert Johnson, Omaha NE, step-great-grandchildren: Austin, Kiana, Kiden Johnston, Citra, FL; step-great-great granddaughter, Aliah Renee Baymen-Johnston, Citra, FL; brothers: Dellanor (Sally) Widmer, Kulm, ND, Bobby (Mary) Widmer, Shelton, WA, Jerry (Tita) Widmer, Peoria, AZ; sister: Jane (Nazario) Lopez, Albuquerque, NM; sisters-in-law: Carol Widmer, Wichita, KS, Mary Lou Widmer, Fargo, ND and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents: Rudolph and Frieda Widmer, husband: Vinson Caldwell; brothers: Clifford, Floyd, Ralph, Clyde; sisters: Leona and Delewis; infant son: Randy Ulmer and twins. A memorial service is 10:30am Saturday, May 28, at Zion Lutheran Church, Ellendale with Pastor Paul Preus officiating. Visitation is one hour prior to services at the church. Burial is at Ellendale City Cemetery. Arrangements by Hoven Funeral Chapel, Ellendale.
