Ernest Schock

Ernest “Ernie” Schock, 92, of Aberdeen, SD formerly of Forbes, ND was born September 24, 1916, on his parents farm near Long Lake, SD. Ernie was the son of Christian B. and Elizabeth (Hoffman) Schock. He was raised and helped his parents farm in the Long Lake area. October 21, 1940, Ernie enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged May 28, 1945. When Ernie returned home he worked for his parents. December 9, 1945, Ernie married Olivia Sandmier at which time they moved in with Ernie’s uncle Fred K. Hoffman and continued farming and began raising registered Hereford cattle. In September they purchased the Gust Kempf farm, five miles south of Forbes, where they farmed until 1972. In 1973 they purchased the Albert Hauck’s house and they resided there until they moved to Aberdeen on July 3, 2003. Ernie died of cancer May 25, 2009, at his home in Aberdeen. Ernie was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Forbes, ND, American Legion Nicholson-Gerdon Post #277 of Forbes, VFW, and served as township assessor for several years and held other various city offices. He enjoyed visiting, playing cards, Thrashing Bee’s, The Flame Restaurant in Aberdeen, taking pictures and spending time with his family and friends. Grateful to have shared in his life are his wife: Olivia Schock, Aberdeen, SD; three daughters: Janice (Steve) Mammenga, Belle Fourche, SD, Sandra (Charles) Wolf, Hosmer, SD, Karen (Bob) Mohr, Mitchell, SD; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; one brother: Walter (Elsie) Schock, Ellendale, ND; one sister: Ella (John) Weisser, Leola, SD, one sister-in-law: Lourentena Schock, Jamestown, ND. Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, one son: Ronald; three brothers: Edwin, Oscar & Gideon. Funeral: 10:30am Saturday at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 624 N. Jay St., Aberdeen with Pastor Jais Tinglund officiating. Visitation: 5-8pm with a prayer service at 7pm at the church on Friday. Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens at a later date.
