Marvin Ulmer

Marvin Ulmer, 89 of Ellendale, ND died June 11, 2016 at Evergreen Place, Ellendale. Marvin was born April 5, 1927 in Fullerton, ND to August and Kathrine (Issler) Ulmer. He was raised and educated in Fullerton. After his education he began farming with his brothers. On June 18, 1948 Marvin married Eileen Davis in Aberdeen, SD. In 1961 they moved to Ellendale where Marvin began working for Red and White Grocery Store while continuing to work on the farm. When the store moved to its current location, he began working as manager. On January 13, 1978, Eileen died and Marvin continued working at the store. Later he became the owner of then, Jack and Jill and later, Super Valu. On February 20, 1982, Marvin married Della Hoffman. He continued as owner of Super Valu until his retirement in 1992. Marvin enjoyed fishing. He never missed an opening fishing season in Minnesota at Lake Lida for 25 years with his son Rick. After retirement, Marvin continued fishing as much as possible staying many weekends at his seasonal home in Pollock, SD. Many of those he fished with were his wife, Della, co-owners Joe Fischer and Paul Scherman. He also enjoyed playing cards, shaking dice and word searches. Marvin and Della traveled to Mission, TX where they enjoyed wintering for 15 years. Grateful to have shared in his life are his wife: Della Ulmer, Ellendale, ND; two sons: Jim Ulmer, Ellendale, ND, Rick (Mary) Ulmer, Ellendale, ND; two daughters: Cheryl (Jim) Bucklin, Coon Rapids, MN, Shelly (John) Grueneich, Wahpeton, ND; seven grandchildren: Ryan (Richelle) Ulmer, Nicholas (Kelly) Ulmer, Trevor (Brittany) Ulmer, Alicia (Jeff) Glynn, Austin (Teresa) Ulmer, Jeris and Jacob Grueneich and 12 great-grandchildren. Four step-children: LaDean Hoffman, Wanda Odland, Charlotte Ehresmann, Angie Kallenberger; 10 step-grandchildren. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, wife Eileen, brothers: Ray and Max and one sister: Gladys Jenkins. The funeral service is 10:30am Wednesday, June 15 at Christ the King Lutheran Church, Ellendale with Pastor Galen Sylvester officiating. Visitation is 2-6:30pm with a prayer service at 5:30pm on Tuesday at Hoven Funeral Chapel, Ellendale. Burial is at Oakes View Cemetery, Oakes, ND. Arrangements by Hoven Funeral Chapel.
