Elmer Schock

August 16, 1935 — January 5, 2017

Elmer Schock, 81, Ellendale, ND, went to be with his Lord January 5, 2017. Elmer was born August 16, 1935, in McIntosh County to Christ and Rosina (Rott) Schock. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school. At age 13 he had the opportunity to attend 8th grade in Jamestown. He had a special place in his heart for Gideon and Marie Hilscher who helped care for him while his parents finished the harvest. After completing the 8th grade, Elmer moved back to the farm with his parents near Kulm and continued to help his father. It was during that time Elmer developed his strong work ethic. On June 5, 1954, he married the love of his life, Darlene Schmaal at Zion Lutheran in Ellendale. Elmer took great pride in the fact that he helped build Zion and enjoyed telling the story that they were the first couple married there. In 1966, he purchased the Standard Oil Bulk dealership and served Ellendale and the surrounding communities for 41 years. During retirement he enjoyed driving school bus; he so loved his “bus kids.” His church meant a lot to him and he served on various committees. His favorite pastime was talking about the grandchildren and great-grandchild and attending their events. All one had to do was “call grandpa” and he was there! There was a certain twinkle in his eyes when he mentioned them and was very proud of them. He also loved his daughter-in-law and son-in-law’s families and they were included in many family gatherings. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandpa and great-grandpa and we will miss him dearly. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Darlene; one daughter, Pam (Dennis) Broderick; one son, Tim (Nona) Schock. Four grandchildren: Travis (Laura Martin) Schock, Lucas Schock, Ashley Broderick, Dylan Broderick. One great-grandchild, Mila. Brothers Arvin and Art; sister Maggie Bertsch, and many nieces and nephews. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, infant son, sisters Ida and Bertha, and brothers Henry, Fred, Benjamin, Gottlieb, and several infant siblings. The funeral is 10:30am Saturday, January 14 at Zion Lutheran Church, Ellendale with Pastor Paul Preus officiating. Visitation is one hour prior to services at the church. Burial is at Ellendale City Cemetery. Arrangements by Hoven Funeral Chapel, Ellendale.
