Richard M. Ubben

Richard “Rich” M. Ubben, 89, of Fullerton, ND died December 26, 2017, at his home. Richard was born May 17, 1928, to Henry and Anna (Arndt) Ubben on a farm near Berlin, ND. He attended Fullerton High School and graduated in 1946. After graduation Richard enlisted in the United States Navy serving on the U.S.S. Valley Forge “World Cruise”, 1946-48 with his twin brother, Donald. In 1950 Rich began work for Affie Nelson in Fullerton as a mechanic, later purchasing the shop in 1960 and owned it for 13 years. Richard married Liddie Smutny September 22, 1951, at the Fullerton Union Church rarely spending a day apart thereafter. They made their home in Fullerton where they raised their two daughters. In 1973 Richard began work for Hird’s Implement in La Moure retiring in 1991 after 15 years. After retirement, Richard and Liddie enjoyed traveling in their fifth wheel RV to many states including Florida, Texas and Arizona where they spent many winters. In 2005 they enjoyed a special trip to the Czech Republic with family. In 2010 they had the honor of traveling with other veterans on a Roughrider Honor Flight to the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. Richard was a member of Fullerton Union Church, Sheyenne Valley Good Sams RV Club, and American Legion Herman-Schlinker Post #137. He also served on the Fullerton city council and the church board. Richard enjoyed spending many hours at the Ranch House drinking coffee, visiting and joking with friends. Survivors include his wife of 66 years: Liddie Ubben, Fullerton, ND; twin brother: Donald Ubben, Apache Junction, AZ; Daughters: Charlene (Terry) Weis, Bismarck, ND; Candace (Donald) Middlestead, Ellendale, ND; four grandchildren: Stephanie (Ross) Johnson; Zachary (Kari) Weis; Tyler (Colette) Middlestead; Gregory (Andrea) Middlestead; 11 great-grandchildren: Grady & Lydia Johnson; Sophia, Esley & Emery Weis; Aubrey, Kinsey & Kaden Middlestead; Lucinda, Cole & Amelia Middlestead. He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant brother, one sister-in-law and four brothers-in-law. A funeral will be held at Fullerton Union Church on Saturday, December 30 at 2pm with Pastors Richard Wadholm and Dave Bennett officiating. Visitation is Friday 2-7pm with a prayer service at 6pm all at Hoven Funeral Chapel, Ellendale. Burial with full Military Honors is at Mapleview Cemetery, Fullerton.
