August H. Wiederrich

August H. Wiederrich 96 of Aberdeen, SD formerly of Ellendale, ND died April 12, 2019 at Avera Mother Joseph Manor, Aberdeen. With his father as the delivery attendant, August was born March 29, 1923 to Christian and Christina (Docktor) Wiederrich in Monango, ND. August was baptized April 2, 1923 and confirmed August 14, 1938 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Monango. August was raised in the Monango area and educated at Valley Township School #3. As a young man, he worked on different farms and his father received the pay. At times they received farm machinery as payment for work. This was how August received his first plow. He went through four generations of farming; horses, lug steel wheel, rubber tire and the more current equipment. August always said, “I liked farming best when I farmed with horses.” August farmed all his life working on farms at Streeter and Gackle, ND. Eventually, he returned home to take over the family farm in Merricourt where he focused on raising Hereford cattle of which he was very proud. On October 6, 1973 August married Matilda “Tillie” Opp in Aberdeen. After their marriage, he continued ranching. Calving season was special. He even brought a few calves into their home’s bathtub during extreme cold. August and Tillie also enjoyed traveling the US and Europe. In 2000 he retired and moved into Ellendale. On April 17, 2017 August moved to Avera Mother Joseph Manor where he resided until his death. August was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Ellendale and past member of the Ellendale Senior Center. He enjoyed telling stories from the past and jokes. August is survived by his wife Matilda Wiederrich, Aberdeen, SD; brother: Bob (Laurie) Wiederrich, Edgeley, ND; sister: Esther Markuson, Stoughton, WI; sister-in-law: Clara Fiechtner, Jamestown, ND and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers: Richard, Reinhold and Gottlieb; sister: Violet Nagel; brothers-in-law: Warren Markuson and Jim Nagel; sister-in-law: Elva Wiederrich.   The funeral is 11am Thursday, April 18 at Zion Lutheran Church, Ellendale with Rev. Paul Preus officiating. A prayer service will be held at 2pm Wednesday with visitation following from 2:30-5:30pm all at Hoven Funeral Chapel, Ellendale. Visitation continues one hour prior to services Thursday. Burial is at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Arrangements by Hoven Funeral Chapel.
