Dorothy Long

Dorothy Ann Hilde Long, 96, of Greeley, CO formerly of Ellendale, ND died June 15, 2020. She was born April 17, 1924 to Albin and Dagny (Gregor) Hilde. She was baptized and confirmed in the Preston Lutheran Church in rural Nome, ND. She attended 8 years of grade school in the Birkland School, Ransom County, ND and 3 year of high school in Fort Ransom, ND and one year of High School in Enderlin, ND where she graduated. Dorothy continued her education at Interstate Business College in Fargo, ND and worked as a secretary in Provo, UT for two years. She was also a secretary to the Dickey County Agent, President of UND College, Ellendale Branch. She also worked at First National Bank in Ellendale for several years, sold insurance and had her own income tax business. On July 28, 1944, Dorothy married Robert Edwin Long. They moved to Verona, ND where they lived for 12 years. They moved to Ellendale, ND and resided there for 39 years where they owned and operated a small grain farm and raised Registered Angus cattle. In 1981 Robert died. In 1999 Dorothy moved to Greeley, CO and Loveland in 2016. Dorothy was a member of the Verona American Legion Auxiliary and Dakota Club of Ellendale. She was a charter member of a Lutheran Church in Provo, UT, a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Verona, ND. Christ the King Lutheran Church, Ellendale, ND and Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Greeley, CO. She taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, circles, Bible studies, Helping Hands, Gentle Hearts, and helped with office work. Volunteered for the cancer drives, 100 club, Tree of Memories, Dollars for Scholars and Hospice and Palliative Care of Northern Colorado volunteer for 10 years. “I loved my family, extended family and friends.” Dorothy is survived by her sons, Russell, Loveland, CO, John (Sharon) Eaton, CO, David, WY, daughter: Jean (Jim) Kalispell, MT; sister-in-law: Joyce, Fergus Falls, MN; son-in-law: the Honorable Robert Castor, Laramie, WY; 12 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert; daughter, Ruth; in-laws, Edwin and Eliza Long; 2 sisters, Constance and Mildred; 2 brothers: Albin Jr., Roy; and 4 sisters-in-law. A memorial service will be 10am Wednesday, September 9, 2020 at Christ the King Lutheran Church, Ellendale with Pastor Justin Brotzel officiating. Burial will be at Ellendale City Cemetery.
