Dwight Clair Filbert

Dwight Clair Filbert, 70, of Ellendale, ND died December 5, 2019 in his home under hospice care. Dwight and his twin brother Duane were the second pair of twins born to Clair and Isabelle Filbert on September 28, 1949 in Aberdeen, SD. Dwight grew up on the family farm northwest of Guelph. Clair and Isabelle lived there for 34 years before moving into Ellendale in 1973, after selling the farm to Gerald Grueneich. Clair and his sons along with Erroll Lilleboe built the Filbert’s new house on the original site of the old Ed Leiby, Sr. residence in Ellendale. Dwight attended a rural school and then attended Guelph High School, graduating from there in 1968. He attended UND of Ellendale, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1972. Then moved to Grand Forks to be with Betty Otterstetter, where she attended Aakers Business College. They later moved to Ellendale. Dwight married Betty on March 3, 1973. They were blessed with two sons, Aaron Filbert, Ellendale, ND on April 25, 1979 and Jesse Filbert, Monango, ND on March 1, 1984. Dwight managed United Building Center in Ellendale until it was bought by Mertz Lumber. He then went to work for Filbert Construction in Wahpeton, ND up until his accident in 2006. Unable to return to carpentry work, Dwight started working at MidStates in Aberdeen, SD until his retirement in 2017. Dwight is survived by his wife of 46 years, Betty of Ellendale, ND; sister-in-law: Linda (Steve) Heil of Mobridge, SD, Mary Marti-Filbert of Ellendale, Mary Filbert of Ellendale, and Barb Filbert of Ellendale; sons: Aaron Filbert of Ellendale, ND, Jesse (Melanie) Filbert of Monango, ND; grandchildren: Hunter Filbert, Johanna Filbert, and Danika Berry; nephews: Jason (Carmen) Filbert of Wahpeton, ND, Clair Filbert of Wahpeton, ND, Bill Filbert of Mapelton, ND; nieces: Amanda (Ross) Merkel of Ellendale, ND, Laurie (Ryan) Buntrock of Columbia, SD, Kayla Filbert of Sartell, MN, Julie (Jeff) Canfield of Hartford, SD, and several great nieces and nephews. Dwight is preceded in death by his parents, Clair and Isabelle Filbert; brothers: Gary Filbert, Darrell Filbert, Duane Filbert, Larry Filbert, and Dale Filbert who passed away in infancy; sister-in-law: Connie Filbert. A family service will be held 2:00pm Saturday, December 14, 2019 at Hoven Funeral Chapel, Ellendale. A private burial will be held in the spring at Ellendale City Cemetery.
