Gerry A. Mattson

Gerry A. Mattson, 93 of Ellendale, ND died April 8, 2024 at Evergreen Place, Ellendale, ND. 

She was born August 21, 1930 to Robert and Ada (Lipe) Marquardt of Bemidji, MN where she spent her childhood. She was the second of five children. Gerry married Harley Mattson on December 13, 1947. They moved from Bemidji to Shelby, MT in 1950 along with their son James. Her husband worked in Shelby as a car dealer, then as a bookkeeper for the Tiber Dam construction. During their years in Shelby, Gerry had three more children, all girls. Gerry and her family moved to Ellendale, ND on January 1, 1957. As Harley worked for Dickey Rural Network, then for the Ellendale Memorial Hospital, Gerry had three more children, making a total of seven. When she wasn’t busy raising a family of seven, Gerry taught Sunday school and led a Stonecraft Bible Study Class. Once all of her children where in school, Gerry worked at the Ellendale dry-cleaners until it closed. After that, from 1987 until 1993, Gerry worked at the Ellendale Public Library. 

Gerry loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with all her heart and would do anything for them. She enjoyed bowling, drawing, painting, and attending events and the Senior Center. She liked doing crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, and word finds. Gerry was a member of the Christ the King Lutheran Church from 1957 until her death.

Blessed to have shared in Gerry’s life are her son: Joel (Lisa) Mattson of Fargo, ND; 

three daughters: Joyce Ulrich of Watertown SD, Jennifer (Dan) Streifel of Aberdeen, SD, and Jean Mattson of Ellendale, ND, 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; and sister: Gloria Milks of Branson, MO.

Gerry was preceded in death by her parents Ada and Robert Marquardt; husband Harley Mattson;  sons James Allen Mattson and John Robert Mattson; daughter Jacqueline Ray Mattson; brothers Robert, Jr. and William Marquardt; sister Delores Lemire and great-grandchildren: Kross Mattson and Regina Fiferlick. 

A memorial service for Gerry and her son James will be 2pm Saturday, May 18, 2024 at Christ the King Lutheran Church, Ellendale with Pastor Erik Weber officiating. Visitation is one hour prior to services at the church. Gerry’s service will be live streamed at hovenfuneralchapel.com on her obituary page.
