Lorraine Jane Nishek

Lorraine Jane (Sand) Nishek, 92 of Ellendale, ND died December 6, 2019 at Prince of Peace Care Center, Ellendale. She was born February 4, 1927 to Thor and Lillie (Hoybak) Sand in Ada Township near Guelph, ND. Lorraine was baptized into the Lutheran faith on May 19, 1927 and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Ellendale on July 16, 1954. She graduated from Ellendale High School with the class of 1945. Lorraine attended the State Normal and Industrial School, Ellendale where she received her 2-year teaching certificate, later teaching country school in Van Meter Township. On June 1, 1951, Lorraine married Emil Nishek at Zion Lutheran Church, Ellendale. To this marriage were born four children. After the children were all attending school, she began working at the Ellendale Public School as a cook. She also cooked at the local restaurant and senior center for many years. Emil died January 29, 1994 and Lorraine continued cooking at the senior center. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Ellendale and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary for 68 years. She enjoyed sewing pillows. She liked animals, especially her dog, Billy. She is survived by her children: Robert Nishek, Lawai, HI, Sandra (Mark) Holkup, Bismarck, ND, Loren Nishek, Bismarck, ND, Lori (Sherman) Cline, Minnewaukan, ND; six grandchildren: Matthew Holkup, Krisanna (Freeman) Peterson, Stephanie (Carlo) Marrufo, Joelle (Ryan) Schaan, Benjamin and Jacob Cline; 6 great-grandchildren: Nicolas Peterson, Alexia, Kylee, and Blake Schaan, Cora and Silas Murrufo; sisters-in-law: Lorna Sand and Elaine Schulenburg and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, eight brothers and two sisters and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 11:00am Saturday, December 14 at Zion Lutheran Church, Ellendale with Pastor Paul Preus officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the church service. Burial will be at Ellendale City Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements by Hoven Funeral Chapel, Ellendale.
