Marlon Carlton Steinwand, 62, of Edgeley, ND passed away on September 17, 2025, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, MN leaving behind a life defined by hard work, compassion and strength. His wife and daughters were at his side as his courageous double-lung transplant journey came to an end.
Marlon was born April 15, 1963, in Ellendale, ND, to Wayne and Iris (Brandenburger) Steinwand. He graduated from Edgeley High School in 1981 where he shared his natural wrestling talents on the mat and then as an assistant coach for several years.
Following graduation, Marlon attended North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, ND and became a certified diesel mechanic and certified welder. He used and perfected his skills to the fullest extent throughout his life as a rancher and small grain farmer. Farming was not just his livelihood, but a lifelong passion. He took great pride in his ability to repair all types of equipment and being the ultimate handy man who knew how to fix anything and everything.
On April 12, 1991, Marlon married Colleen Worrel, of Berlin, ND, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in LaMoure, ND. They purchased his grandparents’ farmstead in the Merricourt, ND area where they shared 34 years together and welcomed daughters Tameka, Tyra, Alea and Shaya to their family. His daughters were his pride and joy and he taught them many valuable life skills as they grew up on the farm. Marlon and Colleen just started their journey as grandparents a year ago.
Marlon will be remembered for his youthful energy, witty sense of humor, and meticulous attention to detail. Marlon is survived by his wife Colleen; daughters Tameka (Lane) Ulmer of Litchville, ND, Tyra (Thomas) Schneibel of Fargo, ND, Alea Steinwand of Edgeley, ND and Shaya Steinwand of Edgeley, ND; grandchildren Mathias Ulmer and Baby Schneibel arriving soon; his mother, Iris Steinwand of Merricourt, ND; and his mother-in-law MaryLee Worrel of Berlin, ND. He is also survived by his siblings Renae (Gregg) Ulmer of West Fargo, ND, Loreli (Gary) Hokana of Ellendale, ND, Clete Steinwand of Monango, ND; his brothers-in-law Lauren (Kim) Worrel of Tacoma, WA, Larry (Cindy) Worrel of Berlin, ND, Vernon (Ranae) Worrel of Webster, SD, and Jeremy Worrel of Berlin, ND; sisters-in-law Suzanne Fritz, of Temple, TX, Karen (Kevon) Greenmyer of Britton, SD; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Wayne Steinwand and fathers-in-law, Kenneth Worrel and Orville Kuske.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00am Tuesday, September 23, 2025 at St. Helena's Catholic Church with Father Patrick Parks officiating. Visitation begins at 3:00pm Monday, September 22, 2025 with a Rosary at 6:30pm and Prayer service at 7:00pm all at St. Helena's Catholic Church, Ellendale. Visitation continues one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Burial is at St. Helena’s Cemetery. Marlon’s service will be live streamed at hovenfuneralchapel.com on his obituary page. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to their church congregation, family, and community members for their kindness and support during Marlon’s challenging double-lung transplant journey. His bravery provided us with some additional time as a family.
