Listen to Obituary

Robert (Bob) Henry Schaller 90, of Sunset, Louisiana was born to George and Anna (Maier) Schaller on February 6, 1936 in Ellendale, North Dakota. Bob passed away on September 5, 2026.

Bob grew up on the family farm north west of Ellendale surrounded by aunts, uncles and family. Seeing the need for a country school, Bob’s dad George started one in Eldon township for the neighborhood children. Bob attended this school until entering Ellendale High School, graduating with the Class of 1954.

In 1955 Bob enlisted in the United States Army, becoming a drill sergeant, stationed in Germany. While in Germany, Bob traveled Europe, explored, adventured and met some extended family members. Bob earned a Good Conduct Medal in the Army for exemplary behavior. Upon returning home, Bob married Sherry Jury. Bradley James was born into the family in 1961, Sandra Kay was born into the family in 1964.

Bob attended The State Normal Teaching and Industrial College in Ellendale, earning a B.S. degree in education in 1962. Bob found his future career on a drive along with a friend. His friend was taking the Civil Service Exam so Bob decided to take it as well. This led to a lifelong career working for the Social Security Administration.

Work led Bob to Guymon, Oklahoma where he met his future wife Linda and her daughter Melinda, born in 1962. They followed their careers to Louisiana where Bob and Linda married in 1974, blending their families into one. Bob loved Louisiana and chose to make his life there. Bob managed the Social Security Office in Opelousas, LA until his retirement.

Bob enjoyed and embraced his retirement to the fullest. Bob and Linda were fortunate to retire early, in the mid 90’s. They spent years traveling the country and abroad. In later years they lived winters in Louisiana, summers in North Dakota, which they dearly loved. Bob was an avid fisherman and the absolute best fish fryer ever.

Bob greatly enjoyed all of his grandchildren, embracing each of their individual personalities. He was also blessed with great grandchildren, whom he considered perfect.

Bob was an infinite source of guidance, wisdom, and love for his family. His love of North Dakota and stories of his early life there were a constant enjoyment for those around him. He embraced life, living it to the fullest. Those that knew him are blessed.
