Thomas Lee Maier

Thomas Lee Maier 79 of Ellendale, ND died August 3, 2026 at his home surrounded by family. Tom was born December 18, 1946 to Jacob “Jack” and Mae (Bollinger) Maier in Edgeley, ND. He was baptized on January 19, 1947. He grew up on the family farm in Ellendale then moved to Minot for a few years and returned to the family farm. Tom attended Albion Township School until the 4th grade and graduated from Ellendale High School in 1965. Tom continued his education at UND Ellendale Branch and later transferred to Minot majoring in teaching and coaching. On July 18, 1970 Tom married Lorelei Hamar in Ellendale, ND. He had worked delivering medicine for Lewis Drug and in 1972 he returned to the farm and purchased the Albert Schaller Farmstead. In 1975 Tom and Lorelei purchased the Maier Homestead farm where Tom grew up and lived out his life.

Tom was a member of Albion Lutheran Church and later Zion Lutheran Church, the Trap Shoot Club, Jacees, Pheasants Forever and he officiated high school and college basketball for 20 years.

His proudest moments were spent working on the farm, haying, working cattle with the Sumption crew, playing with his kids and grandkids, and cheering them on at their sporting events. He also loved the outdoors, especially his elk hunt in Montana and fishing trips to Alaska and Lake of the Woods. Many memories and stories were made deer hunting with his closest friends, his sons and his grandsons. Tom carried himself with a tough yet compassionate spirit, a humble pride, and a quiet generosity that touched many lives.

Tom is survived by his wife: Lorelei Maier, sons: Jason (Lynae) Maier of Curtis, Neb.; David (Teresa) Maier of Winfred, SD; daughter: Sarah (Warren) Sumption of Frederick, SD; grandchildren: Will Thomas Maier, Drew David Maier, Laura Margaret Sumption, Milo Warren Sumption, Howard Thomas Sumption, Frederick Warren Sumption, Brody Russell Senff, Elle Louise Senff; sisters: Karol (Mark) Redding, Sherry (Joel) Maly, brothers-in-law: Bruce Holmberg of Rush City, MN, Steven Hamar of Mandan, ND; Joel (Betty) Hamar of Ellendale, ND, sisters-in-law: Nora (Doug) Kane of Bismarck, ND, Alicia (Jeff) Boyle of Ellendale, ND; great nephews Rhett and Hayes Hamar and many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, mother and father-in-law: Lilian and Lowell Hamar; grandchildren: Thomas John Sumption, Lowell Warren Sumption; sisters: Maureen Holmberg, Jackie Maier; brother: James Maier and sister-in-law: Donna Hamar.

A memorial service will be 11am Saturday, August 8, 2026 at Church of the Nazarene, Ellendale with Pastor Justin Brotzel officiating. Visitation with family present will be 5-7pm Friday with a prayer service at 7pm at Hoven Funeral Chapel, Ellendale. Burial will be a private service at Ellendale City Cemetery.
