Yvonne Lou Weis

Yvonne Lou Weis, 82, Salinas, died Monday, October 22, 2018 in Salinas, California shortly after being diagnosed with colon cancer. Vonnie was born February 13, 1936 in Britton, South Dakota. She lived on the family farm near Ellendale, North Dakota and graduated from Ellendale High School in 1953 and then North Dakota Teacher’s College in Ellendale in 1957. She married Darwin Harold Weis from Fullerton, North Dakota on May 28, 1957. In 1960, they moved to Salinas bringing their single-wide trailer with them. Later, they purchased a home in North Salinas where Yvonne resided until her death. She is survived by her children, Brian (Terry), Deric (Gayle), both of San Jose, California; Ellen (Dave) Wood, of Marina, California; and three granddaughters, Nina Weis, Olivia Weis and Hailey Wood. Yvonne also leaves a brother Robert (Donni) Hatlestad of Port Angeles, Washington, and many cousins. Vonnie was active in the Parent Teachers Association (PTA) for 27 years beginning with Brian’s kindergarten year. She served as secretary, treasurer, and vice-president in those first years of her service. After a break, when Deric was born, she served again until Ellen’s high school graduation. Her terms of service included seven years as president of PTA groups, including El Gabilan Elementary School, the Salinas Valley Council, and the 20thDistrict PTA. She was honored that her position as District President gave her a seat on the California State Board PTA. She enjoyed singing in the Hartnell Community Chorus and spent many Monday evenings practicing with the group for their performances, which were held many places in the Salinas community. Vonnie finished her days surrounded by her family, and went peacefully into eternity. Although she is gone in body, her gentle spirit will have a lasting effect on those who loved her. Updated Times: Visitation will be Saturday, June 29 from 10-11am with a memorial service at 11am all at Hoven Funeral Chapel, Ellendale, ND.
